Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith

Career of Evil

Robert Galbraith

J K Rowling (pssst.. you didn’t know? Robert Galbraith is the alter ego aka pseudonym of J K Rowling)! Is that not reason enough to grab this book??After the phenomenal Harry Potter franchise and the ‘this-is-the-world-for-you’ Casual Vacancy, the spine-chilling Cormoran Strike series is a must-read. Not just for fans of Joanne.

JKR is definitely setting trends on how to write books in the mystery genre! Career of Evil is an amazing thriller!

The third book of the Cormoran Strike series, Career of Evil never fails to impress you. Not a single dull moment! If you’ve already read the previous two books in the series, you will definitely not be disappointed with this one. There are similarities obviously – a murder forms the centre of this novel as well. But the similarity ends there.

The book begins with Robin, the secretary of Cormoran Strike, receiving a courier. She opens it to find a severed leg! *Can the beginning of a thriller get any better?!* Who sends her the leg and why, forms the rest of the story.

For newbies to the series, Cormoran Strike is a British war veteran, who runs his own detective agency in London, with Robin Ellacott as his secretary. He rises to fame when he solves a notorious murder right under the bamboozled noses of the brilliant minds of Scotland Yard- not once, but twice! And if you have not read the previous books, you have no reason to worry. Career of Evil makes a good standalone book. What makes the book even more readable is that the characters are people you would meet every day – people with everyday problems such as bankruptcy and strained relationships.

With each book, JKR gets even more creative with the way the murder has been committed. If you thought the killing in The Silkworm was the scariest of them all, wait till you read this one! Sure to give you the chills! The plot unravels in such a way that you cannot put the book down! Not for a single moment! The book keeps you guessing as to ‘the who’ and ‘the why’ and ‘the how’ of the murder – almost as if you are a detective in your own right! And not many books can boast of that. At one point of time, you go so deep into the story that you are almost certain he is the guy, only to be humbled that he isn’t!

JKR proves yet again why she is one of the best storytellers of this era! Be it fantasy or crime, she is sure to keep you hooked on to her words! With the end of this book, one is left hoping that she writes the next one real soon!

Bottomline- Please get a copy of the Career of Evil, sit back and watch the mystery unfurl! And if you have not read The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm, read them as well! You are bound to enjoy them!

Favourites from the book:

Line– “Those who did not know the ocean well forgot its solidity, its brutality.”

Character– Robin Ellacott, the secretary! Though Strike is the detective, it is she who keeps the whole thing together!

Takeaways– Whatever you do in the best of intentions will always turn out to be right… in the end!
